Beijing Zoo, located in Xizhimenwai Street, Haidian District, is near to Beijing Exhibition Hall. It occupies an area of 86 hectares, with water area of 8.6 hectares. It has previous names like Farming Laboratory, Natural Museum, Millions of Animals Zoo, Xijiao Park. Established in 1906 Qing Dynasty, Beijing Zoo has the history of more than one hundred years. It is the earliest zoo with the most species of animals in China. The zoo currently houses more than 5,500 animals from over 650 species. It is one of the largest zoos in China and one of the well known zoos in the world. Â
In Ming Dynasty, this zoo was an imperial garden. In early Qing Dynasty, it became the private garden of an emperor's relative and was called “Sanbeizi Garden”. In the 32nd year of Guangxu Emperor Qing Dynasty(1906), the owner collected some animals; hence the “Sanbeizi Garden” was called “Millions of Animals Zoo”. After the founding of People's Republic of China, it was repaired and expanded. The new name “Xijiao Park” was given. Until 1955, the name was changed to “Beijing Zoo” as called today.

Beijing Zoo mainly exhibits wild and rare animals growing in China, such as the Panda and the Golden Monkey. It also exhibits numerous rare animals from all over the world including Zebra from Africa, White Bear from the North Pole, Kangaroo from Australia etc. The Zoo houses not only the variety of living places for the animals but also boast the different rooms, pavilions, halls and luscious trees and plants. Other species include elephants, brown and polar bears, tigers, hippopotami, rhinoceros, antelopes, giraffes and reptiles.
