Don’t feel strange if you were given chopsticks only when you are having your meal in Chinese restaurants. It will gain you respect if it is obvious that you have made the effort to learn how to use chopsticks. Please do not play with chopsticks during a meal, and avoid pointing with them. The accepted method of eating rice with chopsticks is to lift a portion of rice into your mouth from the bowl held in another hand. Alternatively, bringing your bowl close to your mouth and quickly scoop the rice into it with chopsticks is also acceptable.

  • Do restaurants have English menus?

  • Many smaller restaurants on the street may not have English menus, only in those restaurants in four or five star hotels can you be 100% sure have the menus in English.

  • Not really. Forks & spoons are available in most restaurants, but most of them do not leave the fork & spoon on the table unless you ask. So, feel free to ask for the fork & spoon if you need them.

  • Do I have to tip in restaurants?

  • It depends! In Western or very fancy Chinese restaurants such as the "Hardrock CafĂ©, Outback Steak House, or Chinese Clubs" etc. or the restaurants in four or five star hotels, tips are expected. But in regular Chinese restaurants on the street, you don’t need to tip even though they look nice & decent.
    Tips: look at other tables around you to see how people act. Or, check your bill, you don't have to tip if a service fee is included (hoping it's in English).

  • Do most people smoke in the restaurant?

  • Yes and no. There is a new policy in China whereby most restaurants are supposed to have a non smoking section, just like the West. But sometimes it is not implemented. In fancier restaurants, probably. In smaller restaurants, probably not.Remember, though, that people in China love to smoke.

  • Do most restaurant people speak English?

  • Yes and no. In large restaurants, yes. In very small restaurants, probally not. But remember, many Chinese people want to learn English. As a result, many younger Chinese speak very good English.
