It will gain you respect if it is obvious that you have made the effort to learn how to use chopsticks. Please do not play with chopsticks during a meal, and avoid pointing with them. The accepted method of eating rice with chopsticks is to lift a portion of rice into your mouth from the bowl held in another hand. Alternatively, bringing your bowl close to your mouth and quickly scoop the rice into it with chopsticks is also acceptable.
